Feb. 7, 2012: TSA Airport Safety Regulations Travelers Often Forget

Security checkpoints can be long and frustrating, but following a few simple airport safety tips that travelers sometimes forget will save time and stress.

  1. Keep Items Close at Hand - You should keep your boarding pass and identification within reach for easy access for checking in, and remember not to leave your belongings unattended.
  2. Food and Drinks Are Prohibited - The only drinks that are permitted through security have to be sealed in paper containers, for example, if you're traveling with small children, the small boxed fruit drinks are acceptable. As with liquids, foods are prohibited past the security checkpoint, except for sealed foods in original containers, or fruits that have to be peeled. Bottled water is also prohibited through the security checkpoint; however, if you put an empty water bottle in your carry-on, once you're through the checkpoint you can fill it at one of the water fountains. Baby formula and baby food is authorized, as is anything you purchase after the checkpoint.
  3. Pack Smart - The TSA suggests that packing in layers will aid the transportation security personnel to see the contents of your carry-on bag and can prevent any delays in getting you to your flight.

  4. Personal Items - The TSA permits passengers to carry 1 qt. size clear plastic zip top bag with 3 oz. bottles for liquids and gels. You should put your toothpaste and all other liquids: shampoo, conditioner, shower get, mouthwash, etc., in this bag. Remember that TSA regulations state that you have to remove this bag from your carry-on and present it to security for inspection.

  5. Don't Set off the Alarms - Remove everything that can set off the alarm when you walk through the scanner. This includes your belt, jewelry, cell phone, coins, ¡pod, etc. Put all of these items in a clear plastic zip top bag and place them in your carry-on bag. Once you are through the security checkpoint, you can put the items back on.

  6. Traveling with Laptops - Don't forget to remove the laptop from the computer bag and place in a separate bin. Many passengers forget to do this and oftentimes can cause a delay. There are some security friendly, TSA approved laptop bags. The bag opens flat, with the laptop in a separate section. If you have one of these bags, then you are exempt from having to remove your laptop from the case.

  7. Gifts - If you are traveling with gifts, especially during the holiday season, don't wrap them. If security questions the package, they will open it for inspection, in which case your work will be for nothing. The TSA recommends that you send your gifts ahead to avoid any delays. Be aware that some gifts might be prohibited from being carried on board; for example, the TSA prohibits carrying snow globes on board.
  8. Prohibited Items - Travelers are prohibited from taking perfume, cologne, scissors, (unless shorter than four inches), lighters, pocketknives, athletic equipment, firearms and aerosols in carry-on luggage.

Being aware of what items are acceptable for air travel will help ensure a speedy check-in and get you on your way. For more information on other TSA safety regulations go to the TSA website.
